Be Safe Be Smart - Walking Safety
Parents, grandparents or caregivers make time to walk children to school. It is good for their health. It is a chance to spend extra time with them, teach them the rules of the road and what is in their neighbourhoods.
Safety Rules
- Always cross at intersections or designated crosswalks
- If there are no sidewalks…walk facing the traffic
- Wear reflective clothing/gear to be seen by others
- Give your full attention to the traffic! No talking on the phone or listening to music while crossing the street
When crossing at intersections without signals or crossing guards:
- Stop before stepping into the road
- Look in all directions; left, right, left and straight ahead
- Listen for traffic
- Walk! Do not run or cycle across the road
- Cross safely when the road is clear
- Watch for turning cars and bikes
- Make eye contact with the drivers
When crossing with the assistance of adult crossing guards and student crossing patrols
- Walk when the crossing guard tells you to cross the road
- Make eye contact with the driver and make sure they come to a complete stop
