Weedless Wednesday: A Great First Step to a Life Free from Tobacco

If the idea of breaking a tobacco addiction seems like too big a challenge, then how about quitting for one day? That’s the idea behind Weedless Wednesday, the annual one-day challenge that encourages people who smoke to butt out for 24 hours; and encourages those who use smokeless forms of tobacco to keep it in the tin for at least one day, as a first step to becoming tobacco-free for life.


National Non-Smoking Week: Contests, Cessation Support and more, to Help Smokers Quit

The annual National Non-Smoking Week kicked off yesterday and continues until Saturday, January 24th. This year, the Middlesex-London Health Unit encourages those who use tobacco to make this the year they break free from their addiction. The Canadian Cancer Society’s Driven to Quit Challenge and Leave the Pack Behind’s wouldurather… contest, are among the resources that can lead to successful quit attempts.


Relief from Cold Snap Brings End to Middlesex-London London's Second Cold Weather Alert of 2015

London, ON – The Cold Weather Alert issued by the Medical Officer of Health on Monday, January 12th and extended on Wednesday, January 14th has now been terminated. Current outdoor temperatures and those forecast by Environment Canada for the next few days are above the -15 degrees C threshold used by the Health Unit to issue a Cold Weather Alert.


Cold Weather Alert Extended Until Tomorrow Morning

With the current Environment Canada forecast calling for overnight temperatures to dip to -19°C, the Medical Officer of Health is extending Middlesex-London’s second Cold Weather Alert of 2015 until the morning of Thursday, January 15th. Local temperatures are expected rise starting tomorrow morning and continuing into the weekend, when the daytime high should reach above the freezing mark.


Overhaul of DineSafe Website Makes it Easier to Find Restaurant Inspection Info

After almost five years of providing information about food premises inspections in London and Middlesex County, the Middlesex-London Health Unit has given its DineSafe website a facelift. Launched in February, 2010, the DineSafe website provides up-to-date information about the results of inspections conducted by Public Health Inspectors at restaurants, cafeterias, grocery and convenience stores, and anywhere food is sold. The new website uses the same responsive design functionality that makes the Health Unit’s main website work on devices ranging from smart phones and tablets to computers.


Plunging Mercury Triggers the Region's Second Cold Weather Alert of 2015

With a forecast calling for ambient temperatures to drop to -22 degrees C overnight, with windchill values in the -30 range, the Medical Officer of Health has issued the Middlesex-London area’s second COLD WEATHER ALERT of 2015. This Alert comes into effect immediately and will remain in place until Wednesday, January 14th when the daytime high is expected to reach -7 degrees C. The first COLD WEATHER ALERT of the year, issued on Monday, January 5th and extended on January 7th, ended yesterday.


"Rethink Your Drinking" Campaign Draws Link Between Cancer Risk and Alcohol

What was in your glass when you toasted in the New Year matters more than you may think. That’s because when it comes to alcohol, the more you drink, the higher the risk of cancer. The Middlesex-London Health Unit, in partnership with other health units across the region is launching the next phase of the Rethink Your Drinking campaign, this time with an emphasis on the links between alcohol consumption and the risk of developing cancer.


Continuing Cold Weather Prompts Extension of Cold Weather Alert

The Medical Officer of Health has extended Middlesex-London’s first Cold Weather Alert of 2015 until Sunday, January 11th. The current alert, issued on Monday, January 5th will remain stay in effect until the end of the week, when temperatures for the region are forecast to rise above -10 degrees C.


New Year Brings Blast of Arctic Air and 2015's First Cold Weather Alert

With temperatures of -15C and a forecast calling for frigid weather through the work week, Middlesex-London’s Medical Officer of Health has issued the region’s first COLD WEATHER ALERT of 2015. This Alert comes into effect immediately and will remain in effect until Thursday, January 8th when the current cold snap is expected to ease.


Health Unit Reminds Residents to Take Steps to Reduce the Spread of Viruses

London, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit has been receiving increased reports of people with symptoms of illness that include diarrhea and vomiting. The viruses that cause these symptoms are known to circulate at this time every year. These germs can spread easily via unwashed hands and also on food, as well as unwashed surfaces and sometimes by just being in the same room as someone who is sick.
