Candidates' Survey Focuses on Poverty Issues in London and Middlesex County

The Middlesex-London Health Unit, in partnership with the London Community Foundation, London Poverty Research Centre, and the United Way London & Middlesex, is asking candidates seeking office in the upcoming municipal elections to respond to a new poverty-focused survey launched this week. The online survey is part of a collaborative local and provincial project coordinated by the Ontario Society of Nutrition Professionals in Public Health and administered by local partners such as the Health Unit. The purpose of the project is to build awareness and support among decision makers for healthy public policy which assists in reducing poverty and food insecurity in Ontario.

Safety Coalition Says Most Children Who Should Use Booster Seats in Vehicles, Don't

More than 70 percent of children who should be seated in a booster seat when riding in a car, minivan or pickup truck aren’t, exposing them to potential injuries. That statistic, along with concerns about incorrect booster seat use, has prompted the Child Safety Coalition of Middlesex-London to tell parents and caregivers that proper booster seat use is critical to the safety of their children. To help underscore the importance of booster seat use, the Coalition will have a presence at community health fairs, events and presentations throughout London and Middlesex County between September and December.


West Nile Virus Activity Continues to Increase in London and Middlesex County

The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced today that two more dead crows found in London have tested positive for West Nile Virus. One was found in the Old South area, while the second was discovered in Byron. So far this summer three dead birds in the region have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the first was announced on August 29th and had been found in the Hyde Park area.


High Humidity and Late Summer Heat Combine for Region's Second Heat Alert

With an Environment Canada forecast calling for a daytime high of 32º Celsius and humidex values expected to reach 41, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is issuing the summer’s second Extreme Heat Alert. The Extreme Heat Alert will be in effect for tomorrow, Friday, September 5th, only as Saturday’s high is only expected to reach 21º Celsius.


West Nile Virus Found in Dead Crow and South London Mosquito Trap

The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced today that a mosquito trap and a dead bird found in London have tested positive for West Nile Virus. The positive mosquito trap, or pool, is located in the Southdale and Wellington area, while the dead crow was found in the Hyde Park area. The bird was submitted by a member of the public and sent to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) at the University of Guelph, where it was tested and confirmed positive for West Nile Virus.

Forecast High Humidity Leads to Middlesex-London's First Heat Alert of 2014

Environment Canada’s forecast calling for high humidex values to reach near 40 has prompted the Medical Officer of Health to issue the summer’s first Heat Alert for the Middlesex-London Region. The forecast calls for a hot and hazy airmass to descend on Southwestern Ontario tomorrow, with temperatures climbing by the afternoon before a cold front moves in and brings more seasonal temperatures through the rest of the week. A forecast calling for humidex values of 40 or more is one of the Health Unit’s triggers for issuing a Heat Alert.


More West Nile Virus-Positive Mosquitoes Found in Middlesex County

Evidence is showing that West Nile Virus activity is becoming more widespread in our community, despite the cooler temperatures London and Middlesex County are experiencing. Since the first West Nile Virus-positive mosquitoes of the summer, found in one trap in London’s Sifton Bog and the other in the south end of Strathroy, one more trap has tested positive in Dorchester.


Health Unit Reports Summer's First West Nile Virus-Positive Mosquito Traps

Mosquitoes found in two local traps have tested positive for West Nile Virus; the first is in London’s Sifton Bog and the other in the south end of Strathroy. The findings are the first indication that West Nile Virus is present in the Middlesex-London this year and provides a great opportunity to remind residents how to protect themselves against mosquito bites this summer.
