Rabies Exposure Reporting for Professionals

According to R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 557 Communicable Diseases – General under the Health Protection and Promotion Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.7:

“A physician, registered nurse in the extended class, veterinarian, police officer or any other person who has information concerning any animal bite or other animal contact that may result in rabies in persons shall as soon as possible notify the medical officer of health and provide the medical officer of health with the information." R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 557, s. 2 (1); O. Reg. 420/07, s. 1.

Therefore, all suspected incidents of rabies exposures, including animal bites or other animal contact incidents, must be reported to the Middlesex-London Health Unit Rabies Prevention and Control Program.

How do I report an animal bite or animal contact incident?

Biting incidents or animal contact incidents are to be reported to the Middlesex-London Health Unit Rabies Prevention and Control Program by faxed paperwork (or if necessary by telephone). The Middlesex-London Health Unit is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Please remember to complete and forward the Animal Bite Exposure Report form to the Middlesex-London Health Unit Rabies Coordinator whenever you deal with an animal incident. It can be found in either of the information packages below.

If rabies vaccine is administered, also forward the completed Post-Exposure Rabies Vaccine & Rabies Immune Globulin (RIG) form. It can be found in the healthcare providers information package below.
