Middlesex-London Health Unit Recognizes End of Ontario’s Measles Outbreak

Posted by on

Yesterday, Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, confirmed that the measles outbreak in Ontario has officially been declared over.

While cases are still being reported in the Western Provinces as well as in other countries, Ontario has not had an outbreak related new case for 46 days. The last case in Middlesex-London was reported on July 21.

“It is good news that the outbreak is officially over,” says Dr. Joanne Kearon, Associate Medical Officer of Health for the Middlesex-London Health Unit. “We must continue to be vigilant about promoting and administering routine childhood immunizations and reporting cases, in order to prevent a similar outbreak in the future.”

According to Public Health Ontario data, Ontario reported a total of 2,375 measles cases (2,060 confirmed, 315 probable) associated with the multi-jurisdictional outbreak that impacted 26 of the 29 health unit regions. 55 of those confirmed or probable cases resided in Middlesex-London.

“I thank the many professionals and institutions, including our hospital partners, laboratories, school administrators and primary care providers for the significant role they each played in the prevention, identification, management and treatment of measles over the past six months. Without your collaboration and hard work, we would have seen many more cases locally,” added Kearon.
