Media Advisory: National Healthy Schools Conference Being Held in London This Week

London, ON – The Ontario Healthy Schools Coalition is hosting Coming Together: Supporting the Whole Child, the 2014 National Healthy Schools Conference on Wednesday, April 9th and Thursday, April 10th at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Centre in downtown London.

The Conference features leading speakers on current topics that play a key part in the physical, mental and emotional health of our schools and school communities, as well as more than 40 breakout sessions. Coming Together: Supporting the Whole Child will also include two free sessions open to the public:

  • Wednesday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., featuring Dr. Claire Crooks who will highlight critical issues in the development of safe school initiatives across Canada.
  • And Thursday, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., presented by Dr. Dean Kriellaars who will provide evidence and practical support to help coaches, parents, community members and educators help children and youth to become physically literate.

More than 400 people from across the country have registered for the conference, including delegates from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, the Northwest Territories and more than 110 student delegates from across Ontario.

- Dr. Claire Crooks, Independent Research Scientist at CAMH and an Adjunct in the Faculty of Education at Western University;

- Dr. Stan Kutcher, professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Dalhousie University and Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health.
- Dr. Jamie Mandigo, Professor & Interim Dean, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, Brock University;
- And, Ms. Rona Maynard, former Editor, Chatelaine.
