Weedless Wednesday: Quit and Stay Quit and You Could Win Cash!

Coming midway through National Non-Smoking Week, Weedless Wednesday may be the first step towards a tobacco-free life. For those who smoke or chew tobacco, the idea of quitting for good may seem daunting, but giving up tobacco for one day can be much more manageable; that’s the idea behind Weedless Wednesday. To encourage young adults to quit using tobacco, reduce the amount of tobacco they use, or remain tobacco-free for life, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is once again promoting the annual wouldurather… contest.


National Non-Smoking Week: Smoke Is Smoke - Limit Your Exposure To It

London, ON – Whether it comes from from tobacco, cannabis (marijuana) or from a hookah pipe, smoke is smoke and you need to limit your exposure to it. That’s the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s main message as it joins health organizations across the province and the country in kicking off National Non-Smoking Week, which runs through Saturday, January 21st.


Expected Overnight Temperatures Lead to First Cold Weather Alert of 2017

London, ON – The mercury is expected to drop even lower tonight and into Saturday morning, prompting the Medical Officer of Health to issue the region’s first Cold Weather Alert of 2017. The Alert will come into effect overnight when the temperature is forecast to drop below the -15C threshold and will remain in effect until late morning on Saturday, January 7th, when temperatures reach a chilly daytime high of -10C.


Holiday Season Ideal Time to Remind Community to Rethink Its Drinking

London, ON – With the seasonal increase in social gatherings and celebrations that comes with the Holidays, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is reminding local residents to “rethink their drinking” and that when it comes to alcohol, size matters. In fact, even consuming alcohol at levels as low as one-and-a-half drinks a day, can lead to negative health impacts.


Health Unit Reminds Community to Bundle Up As Winter Cold Continues Tonight

London, ON – With a forecast overnight low of -15C, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is reminding anyone who might be spending time outdoors this evening, or taking part in winter activities to dress for the conditions. The temperature is at, but has not crossed the Health Unit’s threshold for issuing a Cold Weather Alerts. In addition, the daytime high and overnight low tomorrow are expected to reach -7C. While these temperatures are not sufficient to trigger a Cold Weather Alert, they are still capable of causing skin damage and hypothermia.

Free Public Screening of Milk…Born Into This World at Wolf Performance Hall

The Middlesex-London Health Unit is hosting a free, public screening of Milk…Born Into This World on Tuesday, November 29th at 5:30 p.m., at the London Central Library’s Wolf Performance Hall. The documentary film, by award-winning Director and Producer Noemi Weis, examines matters related to birth and infant feeding around the globe, including the politics, controversies and commercialization that often accompany these issues. In addition to her directing and producing credits, Weis is also the founder of international film production company Filmblanc Inc.

One of Canada’s Largest Health Studies Returns to Seek Participants for Local Study Centre in…

Issued by the Middlesex-London Health Unit on behalf of the Ontario Health Study: The Ontario Health Study (OHS) once again invites London area residents to participate in a long-term health research study and learn more about their health at the London Study Centre, October 4-5. The Study encourages area residents, aged 30-74 years, to complete a short questionnaire and provide a blood sample that will enable researchers to better understand what affects our health and quality of life. The Study hopes to repeat these successes of its January 2015 run in London and is reaching out to previous participants to help spread the word.


World Breastfeeding Week 2016: Supporting Breastfeeding Moms

Having a support system is an important part of encouraging mothers to breastfeed their children. The goal of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week is to encourage moms to seek the support they need, in particular peer support. The annual observance aims to increase awareness about the critical role breastfeeding plays for the nutrition, immunologic protection, growth, and development of young children. World Breastfeeding Week starts on Saturday, October 1st and continues until Friday, the 7th.
