With the London and Middlesex County region moving in to Stage 3 of Ontario’s recovery, the Medical Officer of Health has issued instructions to all local businesses and organizations to ensure masking and other public health measures are put in place. Dr. Chris Mackie issued the Instruction under Ontario’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act today, requiring operators of all enclosed public spaces to implement measures requiring the public to wear face coverings at all times while on their premises.
Environment Canada Forecast Prompts Health Unit to Issue Heat Alert and Extended Heat Warning
London, ON – Hot, hazy and humid weather is expected to move into our region for the rest of the week, as the Environment Canada forecast calls for temperatures that exceed the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s threshold for issuing heat-related advisories. With an expected high of 31° Celsius, the Health Unit is issuing a one-day Heat Alert for Wednesday, before the expected daytime high drops below the 30° Celsius mark for Thursday. The break from the heat will be short-lived however, as the MLHU is also issuing a three-day Extended Heat Warning, that will be in effect from Friday, July 17th to Monday, July 20th.

Middlesex-London’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Chris Mackie, has issued two Section 22 Class Orders under the Health Protection and Promotion Act that will require that face coverings be worn at personal care service establishments, and on buses, taxis and ride shares. The Orders will come into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, July 20th, 2020.
Forecast Prompts Health Unit to Extend Heat Warning Through the End of the Week
The current Environment Canada forecast calls for ongoing high temperatures all week, which will meet or exceed the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s criteria, resulting in the continuation of the Extended Heat Warning issued early last week. This Extended Heat Warning will remain in effect from Monday, July 6th until temperatures are predicated to drop below the Health Unit’s threshold, which is expected to happen the morning of Saturday, July 11th.
Medical Officer of Health to Issue Order to Reduce Risk in Specific Circumstances
In order to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, Middlesex-London’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Chris Mackie, will issue a Section 22 Class Order under the Health Protection and Promotion Act that will compel higher risk businesses to follow public health principles, including staff and customers using masks when in prolonged close contact with clients. The Order comes following a review of local data and research on the effectiveness of masks as an additional public health measure to prevent and reduce the spread of COVID-19. It will be issued for London and Middlesex County on Monday, July 6th.
Carling Heights and Oakridge Arena Assessment Centres Remain Open on Canada Day
LONDON, ON – The COVID-19 Assessment Centres located at Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre (656 Elizabeth Street in London) and Oakridge Arena (825 Valetta Street in London), will be open on Canada Day, Wednesday July 1st. Carling Heights Assessment Centre will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the Assessment Centre at Oakridge Arena will be open on from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Canada Day Brings Extended Heat Warning for London and Middlesex
London, ON – The current Environment Canada forecast for London and Middlesex calls for temperatures in excess of 30º Celsius over the coming days. These forecast conditions have prompted the Middlesex-London Health Unit to issue an Extended Heat Warning that will be in effect for at least the next week, or until there is a change in the local forecast.
Health Unit Warns Not to Gather in Groups Greater Than 10 Following Outbreak Among Party-Goers
London, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced three new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the local number of those infected to 625. Among the new cases reported today are two people associated with attending gatherings of more than 10 people. The initial case was reported on June 24, 2020. Since June 24, a total of eight cases have been associated with these gatherings, two of which were reported in today’s case count. The cases associated with this outbreak include six females and two males, all in their 20s.
One-Day Heat Alert Accompanies Summer’s Arrival Tomorrow
Summer arrives tomorrow accompanied by hot temperatures, as Saturday’s Environment Canada forecast calls for a daytime high of 31º Celsius, exceeding the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s threshold for issuing a Heat Alert. Though the Heat Alert will only be in effect tomorrow, based on the current forecast, the rest of the weekend will feature temperatures just below the Health Unit’s benchmark, prompting a reminder to residents about how to beat the heat.
MLHU Notifies of COVID-19 Case Who Attended June 6th Black Lives Matter Rally
The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) was notified yesterday that an individual who attended the Black Lives Matter rally at Victoria Park on Saturday, June 6th, has tested positive for COVID-19. The Health Unit has been in contact with the individual and confirms that they were wearing a mask while at the demonstration and that they have not shown any symptoms since, nor were they symptomatic when they attended the protest more than a week ago.
