Alert

The Ministry of Health and Long-term Care has provided an update regarding the ongoing national shortage of erythromycin ophthalmic ointment.

A limited supply of the product was returned to the market in February and March, with reported estimated end dates in March and April. Given the ongoing shortage, hospitals are still being advised to conserve and prioritize access based on the screening and treatment algorithms. These can be used to help you screen and treat patients in your practice.

Please note that the Newborn Health Record, which is provided to parents, states whether erythromycin ophthalmic ointment was administered. Parents and all neonatal healthcare providers should monitor for symptoms of ophthalmia neonatorum within the first four weeks of life.

Alert - Infection Prevention and Control Lapse at ParaMed Flex Clinics in London, Ontario

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is alerting healthcare providers about potential exposures to blood-borne infections (BBIs) including hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV for individuals who received wound care services at any of the four ParaMed Flex Clinic locations in London, Ontario, between 2008 and July 27, 2018. This is in response to an identified lapse in infection prevention and control (IPAC) practices at the ParaMed Flex Clinics, where wound care instruments were being re-used without sterilization between patients. The practices that led to the IPAC lapse have been rectified. The Health Unit issued a related media release on August 20, 2018.

Hepatitis A Virus Alert

Recently there has been an increase in the number of cases of non-travel associated Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in a number of regions in Ontario. This increase has been seen amongst homeless or under-housed individuals, people who use illicit drugs, and men who have sex with men (MSM).

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is issuing this communication to notify healthcare providers of this situation and encourage the vaccination of individuals who are at risk.

Alert

Changes to the Immunization of School Pupils Act that required physicians and nurse practitioners to report childhood vaccinations administered to their patients to local public health units were set to come into effect on July 1st 2018.

While physicians, nurse practitioners and public health organizations were enthusiastic about improved record reporting, more comprehensive immunization data, and fewer school suspensions, there were some concerns about the implementation of these new regulations.

In a letter dated June 20th to Ontario Medical Association President, Dr. Nadia Alam, premier-designate Doug Ford indicated that the government was going to “pause the implementation of the reporting changes”. Once a health minister is named, the government plans for further consultations with healthcare providers and public health units.

As a result, there will be no change in reporting requirements at this time. Please continue to provide yellow cards (immunization records) to your patients and continue to encourage families to report their children's vaccinations directly to the Middlesex-London Health Unit, preferably through the new online ICON tool. Patients can also report to the Health Unit by calling 519-663-5317 ext. 2330.

We will be connecting with you directly at an upcoming cold chain inspection to discuss this further. In the meantime, if you have questions, please call 519-663-5317 ext. 2330.
