Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) - Information for
Healthcare Providers

The Baby-Friendly initiative ensures a high standard of care for ALL women and families related to infant feeding. Middlesex-London Health Unit is designated Baby-Friendly. The Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) is a globally recognized, evidence-based standard of care shown to increase breastfeeding rates by promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding.1 The initiative consists of the BFI 10 Steps and the WHO Code Outcome Indicators for Hospitals and Community Health Services.2

Currently in Ontario, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has encouraged and supported healthcare organizations to implement the Baby-Friendly Initiative.3 By adopting these clinical best practices in infant feeding, families will be better supported to make informed feeding decisions and to breastfeed their infants and young children, with an ultimate goal of healthier children in Ontario.
