Health Unit to Offer COVID-19 Vaccination Through School-Based Pop-Up Clinics Starting Next Week

Posted by on

To make it easier for youth and their families who haven’t been able to receive a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine yet, the Middlesex-London Health Unit will host Pop-Up Community Clinics in select London and Middlesex County schools starting next week. The clinics will begin Monday, June 21st and have been developed to provide a first dose of vaccine to people who haven’t been able to attend one of the mass vaccination clinics in the region, whether due to transportation challenges or other barriers.

Through its School Health Team, the Health Unit consulted local school boards to identify the schools where these clinics will be held. The pop-up clinics will help to reduce some of the factors that may make it difficult to get vaccinated. Each of the one-day clinics will be open between 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and has the capacity to offer vaccine to about 350 clients. In addition to scheduled appointments, some walk-in appointments will also be available.

“We know that there are still people in the community who have not been able to book a vaccination appointment or who aren’t able to get to one of our vaccination clinics, but who still very much want to receive the vaccine. These clinics are for them,” says Dr. Alex Summers, Associate Medical Officer of Health at the Middlesex-London Health Unit. “We are grateful to our school board partners for allowing us to use their facilities and we look forward to getting more vaccine in arms through the next few weeks.”

Along with the anticipated delivery of 17,000 additional doses of the Moderna vaccine later this week and a similar amount the following week, these clinics will play a key role in ensuring more members of the community are protected against COVID-19.

Appointments for the school-based Pop-Up Community Clinics will be available to students and families of select schools starting today, and open to others in the community starting on Saturday, June 19th at 8:00 a.m.
