In this update, please find information on the following:

1. New gonorrhea chapter in the Canadian Guidelines on Sexually Transmitted Infections

The gonorrhea chapter of the Canadian Guidelines on Sexually Transmitted Infections (PDF 722KB) has been updated. Although two preferred treatment options are provided in the chapter, please note that based on Ontario guidelines the recommended treatment for gonorrhea is:

  • ceftriaxone 250 mg intramuscularly plus 1.0 gram of oral azithromycin

2. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) position paper

The Health Unit does not recommend the use of e-cigarettes. The attached position paper prepared by the Health Unit’s Chronic Disease Prevention and Tobacco Control Team provides background information about e-cigarettes and the rationale for the Health Unit’s position.

3. Newcomers and access to health care

Please see the flyer below about a CME-accredited event that will explore the barriers that immigrant communities face when accessing healthcare in the community. The event takes place on November 20 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Aeolian Hall. It is free and includes dinner. 4. Hepatitis C resources

A document from the Canadian Liver Foundation entitled "Hepatitis C Resources for Health Care Professionals" (PDF 127KB) provides very useful resources on testing for and managing hepatitis C.
