Playpen Safety

Playpens have been responsible for many injuries to young children.  Follow these tips to make sure that you use these products safely.

Playpens are not intended for unsupervised sleep because they do not meet the same safety requirements and are not as durable as cribs.

Safety Tips

  • Supervise children when in a playpen at all times
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Place the playpen away from windows with window blind-cords, doors, stairs, furniture and appliances
  • Keep the playpen free of other items, which means keeping the playpen free of blankets, stuffed animals, toys, or extra mattresses
  •  If the playpen has a bassinet or change table accessory, remove this accessory before placing your child in the playpen
playpen safety

  • Secure, fully raise and lock the sides of the playpen in place when your child is in the playpen
  •  Check the playpen often for signs of wear such as tears in the vinyl rail coverings or mesh panel and mattress pad
  • Make sure the mattress pad is firm
