Correspondence Received

a) Dated 2011 November 15 (Received 2011 November 23) Correspondence from The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, to the Secretary-Treasurer, responding to correspondence sent to The Honourable Steve Peters, MPP, Elgin-Middlesex-London concerning on screen smoking in youth-rated films.

b) Dated 2011 December 7 (Received 2011 December 7) Correspondence from Mr. Daryl Vaillancourt, Chairperson, North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (NBPSDHU) to The Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister ofHealth and Long-term Care and The Honourable Dwight Duncan, Minister of Finance, advising that the NBPSDHU passed the following resolutions:

Whereas, Contraband tobacco products are available in our community; and

Whereas, Consumption of tobacco products increases when tobacco prices are lower; and

Whereas, 42.0 % of smokers in the North have purchased at least one pack of cigarettes on First Nations reserves in the past six months; and 

Whereas, 53% of students in Ontario who smoke (grades 7-12) have smoked contraband cigarettes in the past year; and 

Whereas, The Liberal party’s election platform stated that “we’ll build on our contraband strategy to choke off the supply of cheap, illegal tobacco sold to our kids by doubling our enforcement efforts”;

Now Therefore Be It Resolved, That the Board of Health for the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit send a letter to The Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, and The Honourable Dwight Duncan, Minister of Finance, commending the work of the provincial government with regards to controlling the contraband tobacco problem, as well as encouraging these Ministries to continue to maintain a strong focus on tobacco control.

c) Dated 2011 December 8 (Received 2011 December 15) Correspondence from The Honourable Chris Bentley, MPP, London West, advising that he received Board of Health Report No. 104-11 re Nutritious Food BasketCosting Survey Results for 2011 and the Opportunities for Action and that he will share the concerns with his colleagues.

d) Dated 2011 December 20 (Received 2011 December 29) Correspondence from The Right Honourable Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario, advising that he received Board Report No. 104-11 re Nutritious Food BasketCosting Survey Results for 2011 and the Opportunities for Action and forwarded a copy to The Honourable John Milloy, Minister of Community and Social Services.

e) Dated 2011 December 21 (Received 2011 December 21) Correspondence from Ms. Kathy Bunting, County Clerk, County of Middlesex, advising that County Council has appointed Councillor David Bolton to the Board ofHealth to replace Councillor Don Shipway who has resigned.
