Smoke and Vape-Free - Schools and School Properties

Smoking and vaping on, or within 20 metres of, public and private school properties is illegal 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.1

Elementary & Secondary Schools

The smoking and vaping of tobacco products, vapour products and cannabis is prohibited on or within 20 metres of public and private school property. If there is property that is used by the school (e.g. playground, sports field, etc.), that must also be smoke and vape-free.

This law applies to everyone on school property - students, staff and visitors. This includes smoking and vaping in a vehicle parked on school property, or smoking and vaping on school athletic fields during afterhours activities - both are illegal.

Anyone found smoking and vaping on school property can be subject to a set fine of $250 for a first offence. Tobacco Enforcement Officers conduct inspections of all schools in London and Middlesex to ensure compliance.

Post-Secondary Campuses

In Middlesex-London, smoking, vaping and the use of smokeless tobacco (commonly known as chewing tobacco) will not be permitted anywhere on Fanshawe College property.2 Also, Western University is taking steps to become a 100% smoke and vape-free campus, to be fully implemented by July 1, 2019.3 Currently, they are operating with 6 designated smoking and vaping areas.
