Correspondence

a) Date: 2015 March 4 (via email 2015 March 12)

Topic: Community Water Fluoridation
From: Dr. Hazel Lynn, Medical Officer of Health, Grey Bruce Health Unit
To: Copy of correspondence to The Honourable Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care

Background:
Community Water Fluoridation reduces cavities in a cost-effective and equitable manner that is not associated with adverse health effects. Research into water fluoridation has been ongoing for over 70 years and at least 90 well-respected national and international organizations support fluoridation including: the World Health Organization, Health Canada, the Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Dental Association.

On February 17, 2011, the Board of Health heard presentations from Health Unit staff and community delegates and unanimously supported the ongoing fluoridation of London’s drinking water. This topic was considered by City of London Civic Works committee in January 2012 through a public participation meeting and asked Health Unit staff to prepare a report addressing concerns of ‘informed consent’, alternatives to community water fluoridation, toxicity of fluoridation and whether or not council has the legal authority to make the decision to cease fluoridation.

The Health Unit contributed heavily to a report delivered at the April 2012 Civic Works committee and a motion was passed to receive the report with respect to drinking water fluoridation and that a resolution in support of drinking water fluoridation be approved. This motion passed in Council on May 1, 2012.

Recommendation: Endorse.

b) Date: 2015 March 12 (via email 2015 March 16)

From: Mr. Gordon Fleming, Manager, Public Health Issues, Association of Local Public Health Agencies
To: Correspondence forwarded from Dr. Maria Van Harten, President, Ontario Association of Public Health Dentistry

Background:
On April 10, 2015 at 1:00pm a coordinated social media blitz will occur across Canada by dental associations and public health agencies to mark the celebration of 70 years of community water fluoridation. The Health Unit will be participating.

Recommendation: Receive.
