We all need mental health. Mental health is not the absence of a mental illness. Mental health is a work of balance. Positive mental health isn’t about avoiding problems or trying to achieve a perfect life, it’s about having the tools to cope with difficult situations, throughout life’s challenges.

1 in 5 Ontarians are diagnosed with emotional, mental, or behavioural disorder and that includes our adults and children. Mental Health Awareness Week draws attention to the importance of talking about mental health, and mental illness, about getting help, and supporting people in need.

#GETLOUD

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) is asking Canadians again this year to join together and GET LOUD for Mental Health. GET LOUD to maintain positive mental health. GET LOUD to get it back. Because the louder we all get, the bigger the difference we will make. And there’s a lot of difference to be made. “Getting loud” means speaking up to stop the discrimination and the stigma that often go hand in hand with mental illness. It means taking action and using your voice to raise awareness and build support for someone at work, for someone at home or for yourself.

Go Green

Kids have stress, too. Kids need mental wellness, balance, and support. To raise awareness about children’s mental health, the first week of May has been declared children’s mental health week in Ontario. Here in London-Middlesex, everyone is encouraged to “GO GREEN”. Support the “go green” campaign by wearing green on Wednesday, May 4, 2016.

Maternal Mental Health Awareness Day

Parental mental health is important for the health of the entire family. Maternal and paternal mental illnesses can affect children, families, friends, and communities. Parents play a vital role in supporting the healthy development of children and building strong communities. 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men will experience a mental health issue during pregnancy or within a year of giving birth. Maternal Mental Health Awareness Day provides a dedicated occasion to highlight the importance of maternal mental health. #MaternalMHMatters
